The two terms have a different meaning in some regions of the United States. A sofa is a couch that has a bed hidden inside. These are also called sleeper sofas. I assume everyone has heard the square and rectangle example. Every square is a rectangle, but not all rectangles are squares. It's the same thing with couches and sofas. All sofas are couches, but not all couches are sofas.
